One of my favourite cars is, without a doubt, the Volkswagen Polo. I know what you’re thinking; it’s no Ferrari, am I right? The truth is, the Polo isn’t a supercar. It’s a small hatchback that millions around the world drive each day.
It’s also one of the longest-serving models in history. The first-generation model got unveiled by Volkswagen back in 1975. That makes it a 40-year old model! Of course, various iterations of the Polo got released over the years.

Today’s fifth-generation models are a world away from the ones sold in the 70s. They feature a plethora of technology and safety additions for a start. And, of course, vehicle styling has moved on a lot since those days.
One popular mk5 model is the ones with the 1.2-litre TSI engine. Here are eight reasons why you ought to think about buying one!
- It’s got superior build quality
There’s a common misconception that German cars don’t have the best build quality. That may have been true once upon a time, but not today. The latest Polos boast high-quality craftsmanship. Scrutinise any model and you’ll have a hard time finding any faults!
- They are easy to buy
Believe it or not, it can sometimes be difficult to find a used hatchback for sale. At least, one that’s in excellent condition. The thing about the Volkswagen Polo is that it’s a mass-produced car. That makes it easy to locate in any area. There are many for sale on motorlinedirect.co.uk, for instance.
- They are practical hatchbacks
You might think that a car as small as the Volkswagen Polo doesn’t offer much practicality. Here’s the plot twist: the car is rather cavernous inside! And you have split-folding rear seats at the back, making it ideal for carrying cargo.

- It comes with DAB digital radio as standard
Fed up of listening to crackling noises on the radio? That’s now a thing of the past, thanks to the Polo. That’s because all trims come with a DAB digital radio as standard! Now one can listen to crystal-clear music.
- Some models are super-frugal
Are you after a hatchback that only sips fuel rather than guzzling it down? If so, you may wish to consider the Volkswagen Polo. Its BlueMotion range of trims, for instance, offer the ultimate in fuel economy.
- The TSI engine is tunable
There’s no denying that some Volkswagen Polo drivers like to customise their cars. You might not think it, but the little 1.2 TSI engine is tunable! A simple ECU remap can provide as much as 30bhp extra power!
- That “whoosh” sound
When you’re driving, take your foot off the accelerator pedal and you’ll hear a whoosh sound. That’s the noise of the engine’s recirculating dump or blow-off valve. If you like the noises an engine makes, you’ll love that noise from the 1.2 TSI.
- It’s cheap to buy, insurance, tax and maintain
If you need a car that won’t cost you the Earth to keep on the road, the 1.2 Polo TSI is for you! In fact, it’s perhaps one of the cheapest (and reliable) cars you will ever own and insure.
