Honda’s revival of its classic Prelude coupe combines classic coupe proportions with hybrid performance to compete against models like Toyota GR86.

The car features an innovative S+ Shift drive mode to improve linear shift control, and this should bring back some of the fun associated with its predecessor, the Prelude.

Exterior

After nearly two decades, Honda’s Prelude hybrid coupe returns as an attractive car that exudes confidence. Honda recently sent media a press photo featuring an S+ shift button above a drive mode selector but has yet to explain this feature in detail.

Expect the new Prelude to feature a hybrid powertrain similar to what can be found in current Civics, which generates approximately 195 horsepower. While it won’t be the fastest coupe available, its balanced driving dynamics should satisfy enthusiasts.

Honda’s decision to bring back the Prelude illustrates its dedication to both honoring its heritage while adapting to an eco-friendly future. It will also resurrect interest in compact coupes, which have fallen out of favor thanks to a surge in SUV and electric vehicle demand. Honda’s revived Prelude will put it directly in competition with cars like Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86.

Interior

Honda Prelude was their entry-level coupe from 1979 to 2001, competing against Toyota Celica and Ford Mustang for sales. Over 800,000 buyers purchased one during that period; today its legacy still holds in enthusiast circles.

Camouflaged prototypes have been seen out and about, and it appears the production version will closely resemble the sculptural concept unveiled at 2023 Tokyo auto show. Standard equipment should include 7.0-inch central touchscreen/driver display along with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility; upgrades could include head-up display or ventilated front seats.

Honda’s large project chief engineer has stated that the Prelude won’t be “the sportiest, zippiest car that you can throw onto circuits.” This statement supports an executive’s statement that this sports coupe will focus more on efficiency than outright performance. It is expected to sit above the Civic in terms of position within its segment compared to Toyota GR86 models like these.

Powertrain

Honda has yet to reveal details regarding the powertrain of their 2026 Prelude coupe, but we expect it will utilize a similar hybrid setup found in their Civic Hybrid which produces 200hp and 232 lb-ft of torque – this should enable it to reach 60mph within six seconds.

The Honda Prelude features driving modes that optimize coordination between engine and motor for an exhilarating yet efficient drive, distinguishing itself from rival vehicles such as Mazda MX-5 RF, Toyota GR86, and Subaru BRZ, particularly its Type R variants.

Honda is showing that they can successfully combine tradition with modernity to offer drivers a sporty coupe without compromising efficiency. Their resurrection of the Prelude with hybrid power shows their commitment to providing drivers with a fun driving experience without sacrificing efficiency. It will be welcomed addition to sporty coupe market which needs cars that match up to old school sports car experience; featuring sleek lines and muscular contours this revived Prelude is certain to grab everyone’s attention!

Technology

Honda has yet to release details regarding the Prelude’s interior, though it likely will boast driver assistance features and infotainment technology that rivals that found in sporty coupes like Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86. Furthermore, an efficient hybrid powertrain may help it compete with sporty coupes like these two vehicles.

Honda’s project chief engineer recently noted that the Prelude “isn’t going to be the sportiest or zippiest car available on circuits.” As such, this means it may offer a balanced driving experience rather than offering straight line performance.

Spy photographers have recently captured several photographs of Honda’s Prelude testing in Germany, and while heavily camouflaged it is evident that Honda’s designers are staying true to concept with features such as its lower grille opening and front headlights with simple lower light bars sitting beneath its rounded roofline and an elegant small rear deck spoiler completing its clean silhouette. Expectations also include a simple front-facing camera as well as modern infotainment screens on its dashboard.
